PHILIPSBURG--The St. Maarten Fire Department has received and approved two permit requests for New Year’s firework displays. Permission has also been given for the sale of consumer fireworks.
The two firework displays will take place at Great Bay and at Maho. The permits were approved after parties involved met the legal requirements for importing, transporting, and selling of fireworks, as outlined in the National Fireworks Ordinance.
The Fire Department reminds those who plan to come out to view the firework displays to strictly adhere to the coronavirus COVID-19 public health measures, such as wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing hands frequently with water and soap or using hand sanitiser. Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs is also appealing for persons to adhere to the measures.
A mask should be worn over one’s nose and mouth, and it should be properly secured under one’s chin. Proper mask usage is extremely important, as people may have COVID-19 without displaying symptoms and may spread it if one is not adequately protected.
Jacobs is also requesting persons to exercise the utmost caution when using fireworks to avoid bodily harm. Parents and guardians are requested to be vigilant and not leave children unsupervised around fireworks.
