PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Telecommunications Stuart Johnson would like to congratulate the management, staff and producers/hosts of radio programs on World Radio Day 2019, today Wednesday the eighth edition since it was established.
Minister Johnson said that radio is a communication tool that informs and transforms and reaches the masses instantly.
The theme for World Radio Day 2019 is: ‘Dialogue, Tolerance, and Peace.’
The day according to UNESCOmarks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
“The Sint Maarten community fully understand the power of radio. During quiet times, we are informed and kept aware of developments taking place around us.
“During the time of natural disaster which we are very much aware of, radio played a key role in the dissemination of information here and abroad.
“I take this opportunity to commend once again all those in the radio broadcast field for their commitment and dedication to the Sint Maarten community especially before, during and after the passing of a hurricane as was the case with Irma back in September 2017.
“Radio continues to be the mode of freedom of expression during many radio-talk-programs, and of course with that comes respect and tolerance and overcoming differences that may exists.
“Congratulations once again as we celebrate the importance of radio on this day February 13,” Minister of Telecommunications Stuart Johnson said on Wednesday.
February 13 represents the day the United Nations (UN) Radio was founded in 1946 and is now placed under the sign of the World Day of the radio.
The eight edition raises awareness among the general public and the media about the value of radio or to encourage decision-makers to develop access to information through radio, according to the UN.
