GREAT BAY--The WIFOL union has signed two Collective Labour Agreement (CLA) amendments with Pearl Development N.V. and Iron Shore Management, two companies operating at Oyster Bay, marking an early development in newly elected President Joanice "Dukie" Richardson's efforts to address outstanding labour agreements and rebuild the union's effectiveness.

The signing represents progress on one of Richardson's first priorities since assuming leadership of WIFOL. Following his recent election, Richardson identified three outstanding collective labour agreements involving Oyster Bay Beach Resort, Holland House Beach Hotel and Belair Beach Hotel as matters requiring immediate attention from the new board.

At the time, Richardson indicated that he intended to formally engage the employers to move the outstanding agreements toward completion. He emphasized that resolving these matters was important not only for the workers directly involved, but also for rebuilding confidence in WIFOL and demonstrating that the organization remains capable of effectively representing its membership.

The two agreements with Pearl Development N.V. and Iron Shore Management represent an early step in that direction, as the union works to strengthen labour relations and advance matters affecting workers at Oyster Bay.

Richardson has made it clear that the new WIFOL leadership intends to take a more active approach to collective bargaining, workplace representation and the overall management of the organization. He has acknowledged that the new board inherited significant administrative challenges, which will require attention alongside the union's responsibility to negotiate and protect the interests of workers.

A central part of his approach is ensuring greater involvement from the union's board, improving accountability and restoring confidence among existing members. Richardson has also identified the need to rebuild WIFOL's internal structure and financial position as essential to the organization's long-term stability.

Beyond resolving outstanding agreements, Richardson intends to launch a broader membership drive aimed at rebuilding the union's organizational strength and encouraging more workers to recognize the value of organized labour.

The new president has also outlined plans to expand WIFOL's services beyond traditional collective bargaining and workplace representation. His longer-term vision includes providing members with opportunities for educational support, skills development and professional training to help workers improve their prospects both inside and outside the workplace.

For Richardson, restoring WIFOL will require measurable progress on several fronts, including completing outstanding agreements, strengthening the union's administration, improving its finances and ensuring that members receive effective representation.

The signing of the two CLA amendments at Oyster Bay comes as the new leadership seeks to translate those commitments into action, while attention remains on the other outstanding agreements involving Holland House Beach Hotel and Belair Beach Hotel.
