GREAT BAY--The Performance Sports Academy (PSA) Athletics Association is preparing to welcome more than 90 young players, coaches, officials and team representatives to St. Maarten for the 3rd Annual U15 Paradise Showdown, scheduled for October 3 to 7 at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium.
The five-day youth basketball tournament will bring together teams representing St. Maarten, Saint Martin, Saba/Aruba, Anguilla, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guyana, Tortola and Statia for several days of competition, training, development and regional exchange.
Visiting delegations are expected to begin arriving by air and ferry from October 2. The estimated 90-plus participants does not include relatives and supporters who are also expected to travel for the tournament.
Competition will feature four games per day during the first three days, followed by crossover games, semi-finals and the championship final during the closing stages.
PSA said the tournament is intended to provide young athletes with more than competition, with development and exposure forming an important part of the event.
A new component this year will give selected top-performing players an opportunity to travel to Tampa, Florida, for additional basketball training and exposure. During the visit, the selected athletes are expected to interact with individuals connected to junior colleges and NCAA Division II programs, giving them greater insight into possible educational and athletic pathways.
Morning training sessions will also be conducted by experienced coaches from the United States, who will work directly with participating student-athletes and coaches.
Referee development is another focus of this year's tournament. PSA, in collaboration with the Netherlands Basketball Federation, NBB, will work on strengthening the development of local and international officials as part of an effort to improve officiating standards alongside player and coaching development.
“As passionate proponents of youth sports development, we are committed to offering young athletes opportunities to develop, gain exposure, and compete at a higher level,” said PSA founder Omar Beauperthuy.
The St. Maarten U15 team has been preparing for the tournament and will have the opportunity to compete before a home crowd throughout the event.
The tournament tips off Saturday, October 3, with St. Maarten facing Guyana at 4:35 p.m. Statia will take on St. Kitts and Nevis at 5:40 p.m., followed by Saba/Aruba against Anguilla at 6:45 p.m. Saint Martin and Tortola will close the opening day at 7:50 p.m.
Competition continues Sunday, October 4, with St. Kitts and Nevis facing Saint Martin at 5:00 p.m., Guyana taking on Saba/Aruba at 6:05 p.m., Statia playing Tortola at 7:10 p.m., and St. Maarten facing Anguilla at 8:15 p.m.
PSA is encouraging the public to support the participating teams throughout the tournament and to extend St. Maarten’s hospitality to visiting athletes, coaches, families and supporters.
Admission is US$2 for children under 18 and US$4 for adults.
The Paradise Showdown will conclude on October 7 after five days of youth basketball, training opportunities and regional sports development.
