GREAT BAY--Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport (ECYS) Melissa Gumbs has emphasized the importance of maintaining accurate statistics and performance records in school sports, explaining that proper documentation of athletes' achievements can play a significant role in opening doors to scholarships and educational opportunities abroad.

Speaking during her latest public update, Gumbs welcomed the growing practice among local sporting organizations of recording individual player performances, particularly in school competitions. She stressed that statistics are more than numbers on a scoreboard, as they provide measurable evidence of an athlete's development, abilities and potential.

The minister highlighted the efforts of Omar Beauperthuy of the school sports organization Performance Sports Academy (PSA), along with netball and other sporting associations, which have begun placing greater emphasis on collecting and maintaining player statistics.

She explained that these records can become particularly valuable when student athletes seek opportunities at schools and colleges in the United States, Canada and other countries where athletic scholarships are available.

"Even in sports, you cannot manage what you do not measure," Gumbs stated.

According to the minister, international scouts and educational institutions often require detailed information about an athlete's performance before determining whether that individual may be suitable for recruitment or scholarship consideration.

Simply describing a student as an excellent basketball player, she explained, is not enough. Coaches and scouts need information demonstrating what makes that athlete effective, including scoring ability, assists, rebounds, defensive performance and overall contribution to the team.

Gumbs said these records help establish a clearer picture of an athlete's strengths and development over time. They also provide evidence that can be presented when opportunities for further education or professional development become available.

The minister stressed that the practice should not be limited to basketball but should extend across other sporting disciplines, including baseball, netball and other school and community competitions.

She also pointed out that maintaining historical performance records would allow sporting organizations to track progress from one competition to another and recognize achievements long after a tournament has ended.

Beyond statistics, Gumbs reminded student athletes that their conduct and attitude can influence how they are evaluated by coaches, scouts and potential recruiters.

She explained that athletic ability alone does not determine whether a young person will be considered for opportunities abroad. Discipline, teamwork, composure and behavior during competition can also affect how an athlete is perceived.

Referring to advice shared with local athletes during the Paradise Showdown basketball tournament, the minister emphasized that young players should understand that their actions on and off the court contribute to their overall reputation.

Her message was that athletes must pay attention not only to their individual performances but also to how they conduct themselves as representatives of their schools and country.

Gumbs Congratulates High School Basketball Champions

The minister also congratulated the participating schools and outstanding individual performers following the recent PSA High School Basketball Championships.

Milton Peters College (MPC) emerged as the tournament champion, with Charlotte Brookson Academy securing second place and St. Maarten Academy finishing third.

Gumbs extended congratulations to MPC for capturing the championship while recognizing the effort and competitive performances of the other participating schools.

She also singled out several student athletes whose individual statistics stood out during the competition.

Among the tournament's top performers were:

- Sean Farrell of Charlotte Brookson Academy, who led the tournament with 9 blocked shots.

- Miguel de Weaver of St. Maarten Academy, who recorded 49 assists.

- Elijah Vicente of Charlotte Brookson Academy, who finished with 33 steals.

- Dominic Peters of St. Maarten Academy, who collected 73 rebounds.

- Terrell Richards of Milton Peters College, who led the scoring with 172 points throughout the tournament.

Gumbs expressed particular appreciation for the fact that these individual performances were recorded and made available, emphasizing that such statistics demonstrate the abilities of local student athletes while providing a foundation for tracking their continued development.

Although she was unable to attend every game because of her ministerial responsibilities, Gumbs said she followed the competition through updates and social media and was pleased with the performances of the participating schools.
