“Saba suffered minimal damage, and overall, we are extremely grateful that our situation is not worse,” Zagers stated.  “It is devastating to learn of the extensive damage our sister islands have incurred and know that the coming days and months will be very challenging for our Caribbean community.”\n\n

Saba is now on the road to recovery. Within 24 hours electricity was restored throughout most of the island and communications are now almost fully reestablished. Sabans who were stranded on St. Maarten were brought home with the help of local fishermen and the Saba Conservation Foundation. The schools on the island, including the Saba University School of Medicine, have reopened and classes have resumed.\n\n

The Government and local businesses are working together on logistical strategies for the transportation of food and supplies to the island as well as alternative routes for visitors until the St. Maarten airport is once again fully operational.\n\n

“We will continue to update the local community and those abroad on any new developments as well as offer support and assistance to our Caribbean neighbours however possible,” Zagers concluded.
