“They will call St. Maarten their home for the month of January,” the foundation shared in a press release.

The group consists of a total of 24 enthusiastic and super helpful students, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Amy Vizenor and Dr. Lisa Dembouski.

Twenty-one students are divided over Sister Marie Laurence School, St. Dominic Primary School and St. Joseph School. They are functioning as teacher’s aides, supporting learning in various ways in and out of the classrooms, said the foundation. “The class teachers are extremely grateful for this extra support.”

The three remaining Gustavus students are stationed at St. Dominic High School, where they are doing their student teaching towards licensing in the subjects Math, Physical Education and Social Sciences.

This unique partnership during which Catholic schools welcome groups of students in the Study Abroad Programme from the university, was first realised on St. Maarten in January 2020. “We know this exchange will provide rich experiences for both partners, culturally and educationally while surely fostering a sense of international mindedness,” the foundation concluded.
