PHILIPSBURG-- The Police Force of St. Maarten (KPSM) is investigating an incident involving a false report of a shooting that led officers to discover three children living in what KPSM described as unsafe conditions.

The incident unfolded around midday on Tuesday, November 3, when an elderly woman approached the police station after receiving information from her granddaughter that her mother had allegedly been shot.

After unsuccessfully attempting to contact her daughter, the grandmother sought police assistance. Detectives and uniformed officers subsequently went to the woman's residence to investigate the reported shooting.

Officers found three children at the residence and, citing concerns about their safety and well-being, removed them and placed them under the care of the Court of Guardianship for further attention and intervention.

KPSM continued their efforts to locate the children's mother, who was believed to have possibly sustained gunshot injuries. At about 8:05pm, the 31-year-old woman, identified by her initials S.O., appeared at the police station demanding the return of her children.

Further investigation established that no shooting had taken place. According to KPSM, the report had apparently been made as a prank intended to frighten the grandmother.

During the investigation, officers also established that S.O. was wanted in connection with a separate incident reported on November 2, involving alleged property destruction and ill-treatment of her former boyfriend. She was arrested in connection with that investigation and remains in police custody as enquiries continue.

KPSM reminded the public that false reports of serious crimes, particularly those involving firearms or injuries, can cause distress to relatives, prompt emergency responses and divert police resources from genuine incidents.

The police force also stressed that children's safety and well-being remain a priority, adding that cases involving children found in unsafe or unacceptable circumstances will be addressed in cooperation with the relevant child protection authorities.
