PHILIPSBURG:— On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, representatives from both sides of the island met to discuss the mutually beneficial campaign to combat single-use plastic. Senior Policy Advisor, Ms. Nikima Hickinson from the Department of Interior and Kingdom Relations(BAK) took the opportunity to share the many successful activities derived from the single-use plastic pilot project in 2019. The Territory Counselor, Madame Pascale Alix-Laborde shared the upcoming plans for the campaign initiated by the Collectivité of Saint-Martin. Both parties agreed to combine efforts moving forward and solidify such in a memorandum of understanding which will be drafted in the coming days. As a form of raising awareness and actively involving residents from both sides, Madame Alix-Laborde indicated that the campaign will be commenced soon with a list of activities. Public activities will be publicized in the coming weeks and the public is invited to participate so that Sint Maarten will be Plastic-Free by 2023! Friendly Island, Clean Island!
