PHILIPSBURG:--- The police force would like to help better educate the community on what to inspect before committing to the purchase of a used or second-hand motor vehicles such as a car, a motorcycle or a scooter.
The reason for sending out this notice is to inform the public of the numerous motor vehicles that were reported stolen. Many of these vehicles were resold at a price below the actual value of the vehicle.
Firstly the buyers of these vehicles had no idea that these vehicles were stolen until later during a police investigation that these vehicles resulted to be stolen.
Secondly, the notice is to help protect the innocent buyer who intends to purchase a vehicle not knowing it is stolen and might stand a great chance in losing all rights to that vehicle and never having his or her hard earned money refunded.
The police department has posted a list the documents on the Police Facebook Page that the buyer should request from the seller and what to look out for when comparing information such as the VIN-number (Vehicle Identification Number) on the documents to that vehicle. If the buyer does not trust the situation he or she should NOT purchase the vehicle and ask someone with more knowledge in this field for the necessary assistance. The purchasing of a used or second-hand vehicle remains the sole responsibility of the buyer.
