PHILIPSBURG:--- National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament (MP) Egbert Jurendy Doran, traveled to the island of Curacao recently, conducted research and recognized the importance of establishing a Calibration Department within the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transportation and Telecommunication (TEATT) here on Sint Maarten. Almost every one of us pays for a service or commodity that requires measuring.
MP Doran first proposed the introduction of the Calibration Department during the budget debate in May 2018. Calibration is checking the accuracy of a measurement instrument by comparing it to reference standards.
This task should be carried out by the department and work based on the “Ijkwezen wet” Calibration Law. The country regulation containing provisions concerning size, weight, measuring and weighted instruments is there to make sure that everyone who makes use of a specific service is treated the same for that service.
Establishing a Calibration Department is important and will help protect consumers whereas various business services make use of scales and measurements. The consumers will be afforded protection in businesses such as the gas stations, laundromats, supermarkets, jewelry stores, as well as the post office, pharmacies, and airport, just to name a few. All games like bingo, roulette, and lotto need to make sure that all the balls are the same weight. Like any measuring device wear and tear is possible over time, hence the importance of having a Calibration Department to ensure the accuracy of the devices.
Given the already strenuous workload on the various departments within the Ministry of TEATT, MP Doran realizes it is necessary to establish a separate division within the Economic Affairs Department which will thereby fall under the aforementioned Ministry.
MP Doran will be proposing this in writing to the Minister of TEATT and hopes to see the establishment of the Calibration Department in the near future. This will definitely be a step in right direction when it comes to the consumer protection for all the people of Sint Maarten stated MP Doran.
