Dutch Quarter/Bishop Hill:--- The K1 Britannia Foundation took part in SXM DOET for the third time and hosted two projects for vulnerable groups.
The “Fun Day With Foster Children” project was held at the "de Weever property" with over 30 foster children from New Start, Hope Outreach and individual homes and over 30 volunteers.
Volunteers included the staff of Antillean Liquors, including Managing Director Mr. de Tullio and his wife, managers, and other staff. Other groups such as the Alpha Leo Club and Bridge Builders youth clubs came out and also volunteered their time.
The day consisted of games such as potato sack race, spoon race, soccer, hula hooping, freeze tag, tug of war and ended with a relay race.
Food and drinks were generously sponsored by Antillean Liquors with contributions from Prime Distributors, Carl, and Sons and Domino’s Pizza. Cookies were also donated by Christian’s Cookies, Goodies & More. Tristan Defoe and Ian Soriano performed a compilation of dances for everyone present.
St. Dominic High School provided the materials for the games. The day was enjoyable for both volunteers and kids and that is what SXM DOET is all about. Chiaira Bowers, K1 Britannia Program Manager commented: “The fun day was meant to connect the community to this target group of foster children, increase awareness, create great memories and show the power a little time, love and attention can have on children.”
Our other project for the day, the “Help At Home” project was to help restore and paint the home of an elderly resident of St Maarten, who had been referred to K1 by the district nurses of the White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation.
Volunteers included participants of the K1 Britannia Work, Training and Social Development Program (WTSD), as well as other members of the community.
Tony Dunkerley, K1 Britannia Program Manager for the ‘Help at Home’ Project commented, “You all gave up your time to help a complete stranger without any expectation of remuneration. What you did gain however is the knowledge that you made a huge, positive impact on that person’s life and that will stay with you forever.”
The activity was geared towards helping build bridges between young adults and elderly members of the community. To show the value to our teenagers of volunteering to help the lives of others.
