PHILIPSBURG: This year, the Sint Maarten Library celebrates book week from Friday, October 14 to Friday, October 21. During that week, selected books from local authors will be read to the primary schools and you, the public, will be treated by secondary school students with a lively virtual book discussion about their opinion and perspective on change and its effect on their growth as youngsters.
From Friday, October 14, the library will host the ‘meet the author & class talk’ program at six primary schools. All six schools will be visited by a local author who will read and have a discussion about their book or manuscript in the classroom. Marianne Teff will read the book ‘Flowers from the sea’. Colin Bootman will read the book ‘The Steelpan Man from Harlem’. Lyzanne Charles and Tianna Today, will read the book ‘Janella and the Genie’s Goggles’. And, Ralph Cantave will read ‘Soualiga Tales: Steve takes a stand’. During these interactive sessions, the pupils can enjoy the story, meet a local author, discuss the book, and ask questions to the local author.
This year marks the library’s third annual Youth Literacy Program under the theme “Reading Freaks Me Out”, which started in 2020 to stimulate reading among youngsters and as a vehicle to show how important it is to read, discuss, and analyze books. This year the participants received coaching from Mr. Marvio Cooks from Altospire.
On October 19, six secondary school students will participate in a virtual book discussion about the book ‘Change is good; You go first’, written by Mac Anderson and Tom Feltenstein. The book explains 21 ways to inspire change. These brave and lively youths are Desmond Jones from the Sint Maarten Academy, Rayeesha Boirard from the Milton Peters VWO, Judelien Etienne from the Sundial School, Emmanuella Pierre from the Mac High School, Alijah Daniel from the Charlotte Brookson Academy of performance arts, Sija Manwani and Divana Khatnani from the Sint Dominic High School will participate.
The Sint Maarten Library proudly presents this very interactive Book Week Program. The book discussion will be live-streamed on the library’s Facebook on October 19, 2022, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm via zoom: Meeting ID:872 3079 3416 and Passcode 401071. The book discussion will also be broadcasted during the week of October 24 and October 28 on TV-15 – Telem CH-15 – TV Carib Kids and Teens.
