The Overseas Departments Emission Institute (IEDOM) has just published the figures relating to the first 9 months of 2023 for the territory of Saint-Martin in the tourism and construction sectors.
On the airport side in Saint-Martin, Grand-Case is more resilient than Juliana: the number of passengers arriving at Grand-Case airport from January to September 2023, more than 81.000, slightly exceeds its levels from 2016 to 2019 of 1% and increased by 12% over one year. At the same time and in the same period of time, 289.000 passengers arrived at Juliana, an increase of 4% over one year. The latter exceeds its 20 level by 2019%, without however returning to that of 2016 (-28%). Strongly impacted by the Covid19 pandemic, cruising is restarting in Sint Maarten with 940.000 cruise passengers since January 1, 2023, double the number last year. Their number, however, remains a quarter (-23%) lower than in 2019 and a third (-36%) lower than 2014 (record year). Suspended from March 2020 to early January 2022, maritime traffic with Anguille is gradually approaching its pre-crisis levels (76.000 passengers). The one with Saint-Barthélemy breaks a new record this year with 170.403 passengers (of which 39.600 have embarked/disembarkated in Marigot since January 1, 2023). In conclusion, tourism in Saint-Martin through its ports and airports is slowly returning to its pre-crisis levels. Already since 2022, maritime traffic with Saint-Barthélemy has completely erased its losses after Irma. Very close in 2018 and 2019, the number of passengers at Grand-Case airport exceeded those before Irma for the first time. Traffic at Juliana airport, whose reconstruction is behind schedule and slowing down its attendance, has been increasing since 1 and is now at ¾ of its pre-crisis level. Cruises, particularly affected by the health crisis, are leaving with a loss of a quarter of their pre-Irma traffic. Update on the construction sector in our edition tomorrow. _VX
