GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – The Government of Sint Maarten will dedicate the month of September 2026 to highlighting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting greater public awareness of sustainable development and the role everyone can play in building a stronger and more resilient Sint Maarten.
On Friday, September 25, 2026, observed as SDG Flag Day, countries throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands will raise their respective SDG flags in solidarity and recognition of the global commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Throughout September, the Government of Sint Maarten will place the spotlight on a series of priority SDGs, encouraging greater public awareness, participation and dialogue around sustainable development and the importance of collective action.
The month-long campaign will run from September 1 through September 30, 2026, with Government’s social media platforms providing digital content and information to help the public better understand the SDGs, their relevance to Sint Maarten and how they connect to everyday life.
The campaign will highlight eight priority Sustainable Development Goals:
SDG 2 – Zero Hunger
SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
SDG 13 – Climate Action
SDG 14 – Life Below Water
SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals
Honorable Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina emphasized that sustainable development must be viewed not simply as an international commitment, but as an important part of Sint Maarten’s continued development.
“The Sustainable Development Goals speak directly to the kind of Sint Maarten we want to build for this generation and those that will follow. Whether we are addressing food security, access to clean water, resilient infrastructure, responsible development, climate action or the protection of our marine environment, these are issues that affect the daily lives and future of our people. Government cannot achieve these goals alone. Sustainable development requires partnership, awareness and collective responsibility from Government, the private sector, civil society and every citizen,” Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina stated.
“During the month of September, I encourage our community, and especially our young people, to learn more about these goals and consider the role each of us can play in creating a stronger, more sustainable and resilient Sint Maarten,” Prime Minister Dr. Mercelina added.
In addition to the digital awareness campaign, SDG billboards will be displayed along Soualiga Boulevard throughout September, providing a visible reminder of the campaign and reinforcing the importance of sustainable development across the country.
The campaign will culminate on Friday, September 25, 2026, with an SDG Expo at the parking area across from the Central Bank on Soualiga Boulevard, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
The SDG Expo will bring together various participating organizations and vendors to showcase their work, initiatives and contributions related to the featured Sustainable Development Goals. The event will provide the public with an opportunity to learn more about sustainable development through direct engagement with those working in these areas.
Through this initiative, the Government of Sint Maarten seeks to place sustainable development at the forefront of public attention while encouraging greater awareness, dialogue, partnerships and continued community involvement in advancing the SDGs.
