Saint-Martin has entered a new hurricane season since June 1, 2026. Whether it's habits ingrained over the years or lessons learned through experience, everyone has their own vision of good preparation for cyclone season. We went to meet you to find out how you were approaching the rest of the season.
Yolaine:
“Like every year, everything is already prepared. Whether it's logistics, food, or even just the fridge not being too full. Generally, starting in May, we build up real stocks of water and canned goods, and from June onwards, we buy very little frozen food. As a good Guadeloupean, we were raised this way: water reserves for the toilet, shower, food, and drinking. We have pieces of wood, nails… everything! And especially mops because, if there's any water, we can mop it up.”
Sumaï:
“You know, you can’t predict what’s going to happen, so there’s no point in worrying. The important thing is to be careful: avoid going to the mountains or the sea when there’s a cyclone warning. I think what we’re afraid of is reliving Irma. We need to prepare in terms of canned goods and a water reserve, because you don’t know how long it’s going to last… We need to take precautions, but that’s all.”
Sarina: " For now, it's not too worrying yet, but the heat is already sending us warning signs, so we need to start preparing. With non-perishable food, water, supplies that will last, and that's all. And we need to prune around the house, the trees and anything else around us that could put us in danger when the time comes. We'll watch the news, and then we'll worry more, but for now, we're just living and we'll see what happens.
