During the pre-semester meeting of the Centre of Excellence and Education through Sport (CEES) Monday morning, director Charles-Henri Palvair announced the creation, within CEES, of a women's basketball training center, in order to better support young girls registered in the predominantly male clubs on the island.
A scheme carried out with the Northern Islands Territorial Committee and which the director hopes to extend to other disciplines where girls are in the minority.
Named CEFB, for Women's Basketball Training Center, this new program brings together this year 21 young girls, including 18 middle school students and three high school students. These players remain fully integrated into the CEES, with no difference on the administrative level. The novelty lies in the sporting aspect: rather than training only at their respective clubs, they will also meet, in addition, four times a week under the direction of Charles-Henri Palvairwho began his coaching career 53 years ago, coaching women's basketball teams.
The goal is to allow them to progress together, at their own pace, and to to form a true women's collective. In their club, often composed in majority of boyssome could have more difficulties finding their place on the field“In matches, the coaches don’t play them and their teammates don’t pass them the ball,” observes Charles-Henri Palvair. By bringing them together within the CEFB, the players will train together and will be able to further work on their techniqueTheir team game and better support their individual progression.
Beyond basketball, the director wants to make this program “a support for human development” and a school of life, like the CEES, which is also continuing its development with the integration of baseball among the disciplines offered in its CST program. This first year of experimentation for the CEFB should also allow for measuring the effectiveness of the program. Ultimately, Charles-Henri Palvair hopes to create similar centers in other sports where girls remain a minority, particularly soccer. _DR
