GREAT BAY--The St. Maarten Police Force (KPSM) has introduced a virtual reality training system in partnership with the Dutch Police Academy, aimed at strengthening officers' professional skills, improving decision-making under pressure and enhancing public safety.

The new training program is designed to prepare officers for the challenges they encounter during daily police operations, particularly situations requiring quick assessments, sound judgment and effective responses in potentially dangerous or complex circumstances.

The initiative forms part of KPSM's ongoing efforts to modernize police training and strengthen the operational readiness of its personnel. The program is expected to be finalized in 2027.

Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling and Chief of Police Carl John were present for a demonstration and overview of the virtual training system, which uses specialized equipment to support the development of practical policing skills.

KPSM also announced that one of its officers has already received certification to deliver the training to fellow officers, allowing the organization to develop internal training capacity and share the acquired expertise throughout the police force.

The introduction of the system represents another step toward incorporating technology into police training, particularly in preparing officers to assess situations, respond effectively under pressure and make informed decisions during challenging encounters.

The Police Force expressed appreciation to the Dutch Police Academy, the Ministry of Justice of St. Maarten and the Board of Chiefs of Police for their contributions to the initiative, including the provision of equipment, professional expertise and institutional support.

KPSM said the partnership reflects its continued commitment to professional development and ensuring that officers have the necessary skills and training to serve and protect the community of St. Maarten.

The virtual training program is expected to contribute to the continued professional development of officers while supporting KPSM's broader objective of improving operational effectiveness and public safety.
