GREAT BAY--Senior officials from Anguilla, St. Maarten, and the Dutch Caribbean met aboard the Dutch naval vessel HNLMS Groningen in St. Maarten on Saturday for discussions aimed at strengthening regional cooperation against organized crime, including improved intelligence sharing and closer coordination of maritime operations.
Anguilla Governor Julia Crouch and Commissioner of Police Robert Clark were welcomed aboard by Rear Admiral Walter Hansen as part of efforts to deepen cooperation against serious organized crime affecting Anguilla and the wider region.
Also present were Governor of St. Maarten Ajamu Baly and Saba Island Governor Jocelyn Levenstone, along with other representatives and members of the wider community.
The visit began with a demonstration involving Dutch Navy and Coast Guard vessels and a helicopter, highlighting some of the maritime and surveillance capabilities available to regional authorities.
Discussions subsequently focused on three areas identified as important to improving cooperation among neighboring jurisdictions: greater intelligence sharing between law enforcement agencies, expansion of Anguilla's maritime capabilities through the planned acquisition of new vessels, and strengthening the legal framework that would allow authorities to conduct joint operations around the islands.
The focus on intelligence sharing reflects the increasingly cross-border nature of organized crime in the northeastern Caribbean, where criminal activity can involve multiple jurisdictions and movement between islands.
Officials highlighted the importance of ensuring that law enforcement agencies are able to exchange information and coordinate more effectively when responding to threats that do not remain within the territorial boundaries of one country or island.
Anguilla is also seeking to increase its ability to patrol and protect its surrounding waters. Plans for additional maritime vessels were discussed as part of the broader effort to strengthen the territory's capacity to respond to illegal activity at sea.
Another major point of discussion was the legal framework governing joint operations.
Closer cooperation between neighboring authorities requires not only equipment and intelligence, but also clear legal arrangements determining how agencies can operate when incidents extend across territorial waters or involve more than one jurisdiction.
