GREAT BAY--Prime Minister Dr. Luc F.E. Mercelina marked St. Maarten Flag Day 2026 with a message centered on national pride, unity, resilience and the responsibility of every citizen to help shape the country’s future.
In his Flag Day address, the Prime Minister said the day is an opportunity for the people of St. Maarten to reflect on who they are, how far the country has come and the future that continues to be built together.
“Our flag is much more than a national symbol,” Prime Minister Mercelina said. “It is a reflection of our identity. It tells the story of a resilient people who have overcome challenges, embraced opportunities, and remained steadfast in their commitment to this beautiful country we call home.”
The Prime Minister said the flag serves as a reminder of St. Maarten’s history, the values that unite its people and the aspirations that continue to guide the nation forward. He emphasized that St. Maarten’s diversity remains one of its greatest strengths.
“Sint Maarten is unlike any other place in the world,” he said. “We are a people shaped by many cultures, languages, traditions, and experiences. Our diversity is not a weakness; it is one of our greatest strengths.”
Prime Minister Mercelina noted that, despite different backgrounds, the people of St. Maarten share a common love for the island and a common desire to see it succeed. He said that unity has been especially evident during difficult periods, including natural disasters, economic challenges and moments of uncertainty.
“Time and time again, the people of St. Maarten have demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience,” he said. “We have shown that when adversity comes, we do not stand alone. We support one another, we rebuild together, and we continue moving forward with determination and hope.”
The Prime Minister also recognized the many people who contribute daily to the development and well-being of the country, including entrepreneurs, teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, parents and community members who serve quietly but meaningfully.
He stressed that nation-building is not the responsibility of government alone, but a shared duty carried by citizens, families, young people, institutions and communities.
“The future of St. Maarten will not be determined by government alone,” Prime Minister Mercelina said. “It will be shaped by every citizen who chooses to contribute positively to our society, every young person who pursues their dreams, every parent who instills strong values in their children, and every individual who believes in the potential of our country.”
Addressing young people directly, the Prime Minister urged them to believe in their ability to make a difference and to recognize their role in writing the next chapter of St. Maarten’s story.
“Never underestimate your ability to make a difference,” he said. “Never allow anyone to tell you that your dreams are beyond your reach. The future of St. Maarten belongs to you, and each of you has the power to help shape it.”
Prime Minister Mercelina said he remains confident in the future of the country because he remains confident in the people of St. Maarten. He said daily acts of kindness, perseverance, innovation and service continue to show the strength of the nation.
“As we honor our flag, let us also renew our commitment to the ideals it represents,” he said. “Let us commit ourselves to unity over division, hope over despair, and progress over stagnation.”
The Prime Minister encouraged residents at home and abroad to reflect on what the flag means to them, the sacrifices made by previous generations, the progress achieved and the responsibility shared in building the country that future generations will inherit.
“The story of St. Maarten has never been defined by the obstacles we face,” he said. “It has always been defined by the strength of our people, the resilience of our communities, and the unwavering belief that together we can overcome any challenge.”
Prime Minister Mercelina concluded by saying the national flag represents St. Maarten’s past, present and future, and should continue to inspire and unite the people.
“May our flag continue to inspire us. May it continue to unite us. And may it always remind us of the extraordinary potential that exists within our nation and within every citizen of St. Maarten,” he said.
The Prime Minister extended Flag Day greetings to the people of St. Maarten and asked God’s continued blessings over the country and its people.
