SXM AIRPORT--Princess Juliana International Airport welcomed approximately 600 residents and visitors to its Airport Firefighters Open Day, held as part of Firefighters Week.
The event exceeded expectations and gave the public an opportunity to go behind the scenes and learn about the work carried out daily by the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting team.
PJIA initially anticipated approximately 300 attendees, but nearly twice that number participated. The turnout reflected strong community interest in learning about the emergency personnel who work around the clock to protect the airport, passengers, employees and aircraft operations.
Throughout the morning, visitors observed live emergency response demonstrations, explored specialized airport firefighting vehicles and equipment, and interacted with the teams responsible for maintaining PJIA’s emergency preparedness.
Children and families were also treated to popcorn, cotton candy, refreshments and complimentary ice cream provided by Aunt Clara, adding a recreational element to the educational event.
The Open Day was supported by the Government Fire Department, Ambulance Service, Grand Case Airport and the Royal Dutch Marines. The participating agencies joined PJIA’s airport firefighters in presenting emergency response demonstrations and highlighting the close cooperation required among emergency services.

We sincerely thank everyone who attended and all of our partners who helped make this event such a tremendous success,” said Michael Cleaver, Chief Executive Officer of Princess Juliana International Airport.
Airport Fire Chief Pauletta Silvanico expressed pride in the turnout and the opportunity to place the work of the Fire and Rescue Department before the community.
“I couldn't be happier with today's outcome,” said Silvanico. “We expected around 300 visitors, but welcoming approximately 600 people attended which exceeded our expectations. Our firefighters dedicate themselves every day to protecting lives, aircraft and airport operations, often working behind the scenes. It was incredibly rewarding to share our profession with the community and inspire both young and old. The support we received today means a great deal to our entire team.”
The Open Day reinforced PJIA’s commitment to community engagement by allowing attendees to experience the training, equipment and level of preparedness required to respond to emergencies within an airport environment.
Through the interactive demonstrations and educational activities, attendees gained insight into the role airport firefighters play in maintaining safety at one of the Caribbean’s busiest gateways.
Following the response to this year’s event, PJIA announced that Airport Firefighters Open Day activities will continue throughout the week and that the event will become part of its annual schedule.
The year 2027 will mark the 30th anniversary of PJIA’s Fire and Rescue Department, making next year’s celebration a major milestone for the airport and its emergency personnel. PJIA invited the community to mark the occasion and participate in the anniversary activities.
