GREAT BAY--As NV GEBE marked its 66th anniversary on September 16, 2026, the company also took another step toward the future of energy in St. Maarten with site inspections connected to its planned solar energy and Battery Energy Storage System projects.
The initiative forms part of NV GEBE’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the resilience of the electricity grid, expand the use of alternative energy and reduce St. Maarten’s dependence on fuel for electricity generation.
NV GEBE is progressing plans for a 6-megawatt solar energy project, proposed to be developed in two phases. The first phase would provide 2 megawatts of solar generation capacity, followed by an additional 4 megawatts.
The company is also advancing plans for 28 megawatts of battery energy storage, with support from the Netherlands, aimed at strengthening grid resilience and improving the management of electricity supply and demand.
During the site inspections, the project team and potential vendors visited several proposed locations, including the Mullet Bay, Zagersgut and Pond Island substations, where battery storage systems are planned.
The locations were identified based on electricity demand and the role each substation plays in supplying surrounding communities. Inspections also continued at proposed solar plant locations at Hope Estate and parking areas along Walter J. Nisbeth Road.
The planned battery systems are expected to support a process known as peak shaving, which allows stored electricity to supplement generation during periods of high demand.
By reducing the need for additional generation during peak periods, the system has the potential to lower fuel consumption, maintenance requirements and other associated costs while supporting a more resilient electricity network. NV GEBE said these savings could ultimately contribute to a reduction in the fuel clause charged to consumers.
The company’s broader alternative energy program also includes exploring electric vehicle charging infrastructure as the number of electric vehicles on St. Maarten continues to grow.
The site inspections represent another step toward moving the projects into implementation, including determining the appropriate technical solutions, selecting qualified vendors and installing infrastructure capable of supporting a more resilient electricity network.
NV GEBE said the projects are being pursued with a focus on Restoring Utility Affordability for consumers, while strengthening the long-term reliability and sustainability of the country’s electricity system.
As NV GEBE celebrates 66 years of serving St. Maarten, the company said its focus remains not only on its history, but also on building a more resilient and sustainable energy future for the community.
