GREAT BAY--Member of Parliament Sjamira Roseburg is encouraging students across St. Maarten to approach the new school year with focus, positive influences and clear goals, while calling on parents, teachers and the wider community to recognize the role they each play in helping children become the best version of themselves.

With the first day of school completed, Roseburg congratulated students on taking the first step into the new academic year and urged them to carry that momentum into the days and months ahead.

“So the first school day is a wrap. You did it,” Roseburg said. “For the following days ahead, make sure you stay focused. It’s a fresh start, so surround yourself with good company, pay attention to what the teacher is saying, and keep your eye on that goal.”

Roseburg told students that she believes in their ability to succeed, while stressing that success throughout the school year will require consistency, discipline and the willingness to make good choices.

Her message also focused strongly on teachers, whom she asked to exercise patience and understanding as students settle into another academic year.

“To the teachers, please be patient with the students. Not every day is the same, but they believe in you, and they need you,” Roseburg said.

She noted that educators often play an important role beyond academics, providing encouragement, stability and guidance to young people at different stages of their development.

Roseburg also appealed directly to parents and guardians to remain present and involved in their children’s lives, acknowledging that balancing family, work and other responsibilities is not always easy.

“And parents, I know it’s not always easy. But please try to be present,” she said. “Make sure that your child looks at you and thinks, ‘Yes, my mom or my dad got me.’”

Roseburg said children benefit when they know they have dependable support at home, at school and within their communities.

Her message extended beyond parents and educators, with the MP emphasizing that the wider community also carries a responsibility for creating an environment in which children can grow and succeed.

“Community, we also have a job to do. So let’s do our part, and let’s make sure that that child builds the best version of themselves,” Roseburg said.

She closed her message by again calling for patience with students throughout the school year, noting that children will experience good days and difficult days and should have adults around them who continue to encourage their development.

Roseburg wished students, teachers, parents and school communities across St. Maarten a productive school year, with her message centered on shared responsibility, encouragement and ensuring that every child has the support needed to move forward with confidence.
