GREAT BAY--Member of Parliament Sjamira Roseburg has expressed her hope of welcoming Curaçao international goalkeeper and Guinness World Record holder Eloy Room to St. Maarten, following a recent meeting with the footballer in Curaçao during which he shared a message of encouragement for young athletes on both sides of the island.

Roseburg met Room during an event marking his Guinness World Records recognition and used the opportunity to ask the goalkeeper to share advice with aspiring footballers in St. Maarten and French St. Martin.

According to the MP, Room's message centered on three principles: never giving up on one's dreams, working hard and remembering to enjoy the game.

Roseburg said the message is particularly relevant to young Caribbean athletes who aspire to compete internationally but may sometimes feel that opportunities are limited because they come from small islands.

She emphasized that Room's journey demonstrates the importance of dedication, discipline and perseverance in pursuing sporting ambitions.

As a Curaçao international who has competed at the highest levels of professional football, Room represents an example of the opportunities available to Caribbean athletes who continue developing their abilities and pursuing their goals.

Roseburg said young players should recognize that improvement comes through consistent training, competition and a willingness to learn from setbacks.

She encouraged aspiring footballers to approach every training session and match as an opportunity to develop their skills, improve their understanding of the game and move closer to their personal objectives.

The MP also stressed that the size of a young athlete's community should not determine the scale of their ambitions.

She pointed out that Caribbean athletes have demonstrated their ability to compete internationally and that young people in St. Maarten should be encouraged to pursue similar opportunities through commitment and preparation.

Reflecting on her meeting with Room, Roseburg expressed appreciation for his willingness to take a moment to address young people from St. Maarten.

She said encouragement from established athletes can have a meaningful influence on young players, particularly when it comes from someone who has personally experienced the challenges of building a professional sporting career.

The MP believes that exposing young people to successful Caribbean athletes can help reinforce the importance of discipline, confidence and determination, both in sports and in their personal development.

Roseburg also expressed her wish to eventually welcome Room to St. Maarten, where he could interact directly with young footballers and share his experiences.

She believes such a visit would provide an opportunity for aspiring athletes to learn more about the demands of professional football, the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and the commitment required to compete at an international level.

While no formal visit or arrangement has been announced, Roseburg said she sincerely hopes the opportunity can be realized.

The MP encouraged young athletes throughout St. Maarten and French St. Martin to remain focused on their development and continue pursuing their goals, regardless of the challenges they encounter.

Her message to young footballers was to remain committed to training, maintain their enthusiasm for the sport and recognize that setbacks are part of the development process.

Roseburg concluded by expressing her appreciation to Room for sharing his encouragement and reiterated her hope that St. Maarten will have an opportunity to welcome the Curaçao goalkeeper in the future.
