GREAT BAY--Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, ECYS, Melissa Gumbs on Wednesday said that her Ministry is moving into the first phase of stakeholder consultations as it develops a policy to guide the responsible use of artificial intelligence in education.

The consultation process will involve educators, schools, education programs and other stakeholders whose experience and input will help shape how AI is introduced and managed within the education system.

The policy-development process is intended to establish a clear framework for using AI in ways that support teaching, learning and educational administration while addressing concerns related to academic integrity, privacy, data protection and responsible technology use.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing how students access information, complete assignments and develop new skills. It is also creating opportunities for educators to personalize instruction, prepare learning materials and improve administrative processes.

The Ministry’s consultation process will provide education stakeholders with an opportunity to identify potential benefits, risks and practical considerations before formal guidelines are finalized.

Among the areas expected to require attention are the acceptable use of AI-generated content, student assessment, plagiarism, teacher training, protection of student information and ensuring that technology supports rather than replaces critical thinking and independent learning.

The development of the policy reflects the need for the education system to respond to emerging technology in a coordinated manner. Rather than allowing AI use to develop without common standards, ECYS is seeking stakeholder input to establish expectations that can be applied consistently across schools and education programs.

Further information regarding the consultation schedule, participating groups and subsequent phases of the policy-development process is expected to be provided as the initiative progresses.
