The result left Curaçao at the bottom of Group E with one point from three matches, officially eliminating the team from the tournament. Germany finished top of the group with six points, followed by Ivory Coast, also on six points. Ecuador placed third with four points, while Curaçao closed the group stage in fourth.
Curaçao entered the match needing a victory over Ivory Coast to have any chance of advancing to the Round of 32. Even then, the team would have needed the other Group E result to go its way, along with favorable tiebreaker conditions. Once Curaçao lost and Ecuador defeated Germany 2-1 in the group’s other match, there was no remaining path forward.
For Curaçao, the match was always going to be difficult. Ivory Coast came into the fixture knowing that a positive result could secure a place in the knockout round, and the African side played with the urgency of a team trying to extend its tournament. Thursday’s loss, however, confirmed the end of the road. Curaçao finished the group stage with one goal scored, nine conceded and one point earned. The numbers show the difficulty of the assignment, but they do not erase the significance of the team’s presence on the world stage.
For a nation making its World Cup debut, Curaçao’s appearance carried meaning beyond the final standings. The team faced Germany, Ecuador and Ivory Coast in one of the tournament’s demanding groups, earned a point, and reached the final matchday with something still to play for.
Ivory Coast, by contrast, moved on from the group after collecting six points. The win over Curaçao confirmed its place in the knockout round and continued a strong campaign that included a victory over Ecuador and a narrow defeat to Germany.
Curaçao’s elimination will sting, especially after the team had given itself a chance with the draw against Ecuador. But the campaign also leaves the island with a historic foundation. Curaçao did not advance, but it reached the World Cup, competed in Group E, earned its first point and showed that it belonged on the global stage.
The final whistle in Philadelphia closed Curaçao’s tournament, but not the importance of what the team achieved. This was the end of the World Cup journey for 2026, but it may also be remembered as the beginning of a new chapter for Curaçao football.
