GREAT BAY--St. Maarten marine conservationist Tadzio Bervoets has completed a series of professional engagements in Australia and New Zealand focused on coral reef restoration, climate resilience, environmental monitoring and stronger regional responses to coral reef emergencies.
The program included meetings with the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, also known as the Reef Authority. Discussions addressed the relationship between scientific research, protected-area management and the practical deployment of reef interventions. Particular attention was given to Australia’s Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program, environmental forecasting, coral propagation and the governance required to test restoration methods safely and at scale.
Bervoets also visited the Cawthron Institute in Nelson, New Zealand. Cawthron is New Zealand’s largest independent science organisation and works across marine ecosystems, environmental monitoring, aquaculture, aquatic health and climate adaptation. The visit provided an opportunity to consider how monitoring technologies, applied research and institutional partnerships could support coral reef management and sustainable ocean initiatives in the Caribbean.
The engagements formed part of Bervoets’ participation in the 16th International Coral Reef Symposium, held in Auckland from July 19 to 24. The Symposium brought together more than 2,100 delegates from 90 countries. Bervoets delivered a presentation titled “Designing a Science-Based Emergency Response Framework to Safeguard Caribbean Coral Reefs” and facilitated an interactive workshop examining what rapid-response planning means for reef managers and practitioners.
“Caribbean reef managers face increasing pressures with limited personnel, financing and technical resources,” Bervoets said. “These exchanges help identify approaches that can be adapted to our region and strengthen the connection between scientific information and management action.”
The engagements will inform Bervoets’ continuing work on the Caribbean Coral Emergency Response Plan, marine protected-area management and regional conservation cooperation. Follow-up will focus on monitoring partnerships, technical exchange and practical approaches that can be tested under Caribbean ecological and operational conditions.
Bervoets serves as Chair of the UNESCO Ocean Decade Task Force for Latin America and the Caribbean and works throughout the region on marine conservation, climate resilience, conservation finance and sustainable ocean policy.
