The That Yoda Guy Movie Museum Foundation officially launch its first Children’s Creative Initiative today with the support of The Honorable Melissa D. Gumbs, The Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport. The initiative invites students across the island to take part in a fun and imaginative creative competition celebrating Star Wars week, May the 4th to 9th, within the vibrant spirit of Carnival.

"For the past decade I've wanted to create an event to encourage kids to be more creative," explains "Yoda Guy" Nick Maley, a man with the making of sixty-five movies to his credit. "Hurricanes and COVID came, and only now do we have the staff and support to make that a dream a reality. It culminates in an award event for 40 finalists and prizes for the winners."

The competition encourages all students in Sint Maarten's primary and secondary schools to explore their creativity through a unique and exciting theme: “What if the galaxy far, far away came to Carnival?”

Participants are invited to bring their ideas to life in one, or both, of two categories:

* Paint or Draw it

* Write a Short Story

"We aim to spark creativity and imagination by encouraging school students to explore what might happen when Star Wars characters intermingle with the energy, culture, and color of Carnival," Maley clarifies. "We are deeply grateful for the support of Pineapple Pete's Restaurant for our prize giving on May 9th, and Island Sightseeing who will take finalists on a celebratory train ride to the Yoda Guy Movie Experience that day also."

Important Information

Submission Open: April 1st

Submissions Close: April 17th

Open to: Primary and Secondary school students

Besides co-creating Yoda for Star Wars and character effects for 65 film projects, producing over 400 artworks and writing three books, Nick Maley started this initiative to inspire young people to think beyond limits.

“Our goal is simple,” Maley shares, "to inspiring the next generation of creative professionals and, in a world of AI and computers, to celebrate the imagination and artistry of the human mind. AI simulates and repackages human creativity. In the future, it will be too easy to sit back and let AI produce simulations of our former talents. I don't want to see humanity reduced to consumers. More than ever we need the leaders of tomorrow to be innovative and inspired."
