KRALENDIJK--Bonaire’s government coalition has entered a new political crisis after “Union Patriotiko Boneriano” (UPB) withdrew its confidence in coalition partner “Movementu di Pueblo Boneriano” (MPB).
UPB Island Council faction leader Benito Dirksz informed acting Island Governor Wong Loi Sing by letter that his party was “immediately ending its confidence in MPB” as governing partner.
“We deeply regret that we have had to conclude that the necessary trust is lacking to continue the political cooperation with the party in the coalition, MPB,” Dirksz wrote on behalf of himself and fellow faction members Kroon and Chirino.
“As a result of this loss of confidence in MPB, I hereby inform you that the UPB faction is withdrawing its support as a coalition partner with immediate effect,” he added.
UPB also requested a meeting with Wong Loi Sing to explain its position and discuss the situation, which the party described as highly regrettable.
The break reportedly came without direct prior notification to MPB’s leadership. According to reports, they discovered that UPB had withdrawn its support after receiving a copy of the letter that was sent to the acting governor.
The collapse of the coalition, which had only been in place for approximately four months, comes after a period of growing tensions between the governing partners.
MPB and the Serberie faction had reportedly expressed frustration over what they viewed as an arrogant attitude of UPB within the coalition. The disagreements gradually weakened the relationship between the two parties and eventually led to a crisis.
This adds to a series of governmental challenges on Bonaire, where coalition stability has repeatedly proven difficult in recent years.
The immediate consequences of UPB’s decision and possible formation of a new governing coalition remain unclear. Further discussions with the acting governor are expected to determine the next steps.
