Field exercises are designed to strengthen combat readiness and coordination.
KRALENDIJK--The Company in the West, a unit of the Royal Netherlands Army normally stationed on Curaçao, is currently conducting a training exercise on Bonaire. The exercise runs until April 22, and forms part of preparations for the armed forces’ primary constitutional duty: the defence of the Kingdom.
The training programme includes a range of operational scenarios. On designated training grounds, soldiers are taking part in exercises simulating the liberation of a fictitious enemy-held area. These drills are designed to strengthen combat readiness and coordination in complex operational environments.
In addition to field exercises, personnel are also carrying out so-called “social patrols” in and around Kralendijk. During these patrols, soldiers engage with residents to build community relations, establish local contacts, and exchange information.
According to the Royal Netherlands Army, the exercise on Bonaire reflects the armed forces’ constitutional responsibilities in the Caribbean region. These include the ability to defend Kingdom territory and to provide military assistance when required.
The Army also emphasised the importance of familiarity with all islands within the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Regular training deployments, such as the current exercise on Bonaire, are intended to ensure that personnel are well acquainted with local conditions and operational environments across the region.
