PHILIPSBURG--Finance Minister Marinka Gumbs says a new vehicle licence plate is still in the pipeline to be introduced in 2027, followed by personalized licence plates planned for 2028, as Government looks at ways to improve road-tax compliance and generate additional revenue.
Gumbs made the statements during the radio programme The Breakfast Lounge with Lady Grace on Friday.
She said vehicle road-tax figures increased in 2026 compared with 2025, but she believes there is still room for improvement because she considers 2023 to have been the highest year for road-tax payments.
Gumbs said she believes the continued use of the same licence plate contributes to people not being identified as easily for road-tax enforcement. She said stronger cooperation between the Ministries of Finance and Justice is also needed so that controls can continue. “We are still coming with a new plate for 2027.”
Gumbs also said personalized licence plates are being considered for 2028. She credited Member of Parliament (MP) Sjamira Roseburg with assisting during the 2026 budget debate by drafting legislation that would allow government to pursue personalized plates.
Gumbs said she had met with her team and that personalized plates are something government intends to pursue for 2028. She said it has not yet been decided whether the personalized plate would be placed on the front, back or both.
She said people have been requesting personalized plates and that they could serve as an additional source of government revenue because vehicle owners would have to pay for them.
