SIMPSON BAY--Government intends to reopen the Simpson Bay Service Center after reviewing how public buildings are supervised and maintained, Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina said during Wednesday’s live Council of Ministers press briefing.
Mercelina said shortcomings in the maintenance of buildings managed by the government buildings foundation “Stichting Overheids Gebouwen” (SOG) were among the issues being examined following the service centre’s closure.
Government is now reviewing the organisational structure responsible for these buildings to determine what changes are needed to improve maintenance and supervision.
As an example, Mercelina referred to work carried out at the Carnival Village, where damaged booths were addressed, roofs were repaired and painting and other improvements were completed.
He said attention would now turn to the Simpson Bay building, with the intention of finding an arrangement that would allow the facility to reopen.
Mercelina also pointed to government’s shortage of personnel and the need to recruit qualified professionals to fill civil service positions. He said strengthening the public service was part of the broader effort to develop the country.
“The intention is to reopen the service centre after we have the right formula to reorganise the supervision and maintenance of these buildings,” Mercelina said.
