During the launch
WILLEMSTAD--Passengers travelling with “Autobus Bedrijf Curaçao” (ABC) can now enjoy free internet access, following the launch of complimentary Wi-Fi on all its 34 buses. The service was officially inaugurated on Tuesday with invited guests taking a demonstration ride while using the new onboard internet.
According to the government-owned company, the project reflects the growing importance of digital connectivity in everyday life and aims to ensure that passengers remain connected while travelling across the island. The service is being provided through Qonèkt, made possible by the collaboration between the two companies under the Integrated Utility Holding (IUH).
Qonèkt General Manager Rauf Engels said the project is about more than simply offering internet access. "This is about well-being," Engels said. "It is about ensuring that connectivity is available not only at home, at work or in offices, but also in the daily lives of our citizens. Everyone should have an equal opportunity to connect to the internet, information, opportunities and other people."
ABC’s General Manager, Raycelli Seferina, described the initiative as another milestone in the modernisation of Curaçao's public transportation system. "This represents much more than the internet on buses," Seferina said. "It marks the beginning of a journey in which technology will transform the way people experience public transportation."
He also announced that ABC is preparing to introduce a mobile application that will allow passengers to track buses in real time, see exactly when they arrive at a stop and better plan their journeys with greater confidence and convenience.
IUH Chief Executive Officer Neysa Isenia said the project demonstrates the benefits of collaboration between companies within the holding. "This project illustrates the added value of being part of IUH," Isenia said. "It shows how two companies can combine their expertise to turn a shared vision into reality."
The Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB) also partnered in the initiative. According to the organisation, providing Wi-Fi on public buses is not only an investment in public transportation but also enhances the visitor experience and strengthens Curaçao's competitiveness as a tourist destination.
Minister of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning VVRP Charles Cooper welcomed the initiative, saying it aligns with the government's broader vision of building a modern, digital infrastructure. "It is a decision that supports the government's vision of a modern and digitalised infrastructure where no citizen is left behind," Cooper said.
ABC added that the introduction of free Wi-Fi is only the first step in a broader digital transformation. The technological platform will support additional innovations in the future, offering new services and improving the overall experience for public transportation users across Curaçao.
