WILLEMSTAD--The Colombian community on Curaçao gathered on Sunday to commemorate Independence Day, honouring their history and connection to the homeland.

The neighbouring country’s national holiday is celebrated every year on July 20. On this day in 1810, Colombians took a first step towards autonomy in 1810 by speaking out against Spanish colonial rule.

Although that declaration marked a significant turning point, Colombia's independence was not definitively secured until 1819. This occurred under the leadership of the famous freedom fighter Simón Bolívar, who played a central role in the liberation of South America.

In Curaçao, members of the community came together to celebrate Colombian culture, traditions and national pride. Through prayer, music, togetherness and the sharing of their identity, the significance of this important day was reflected upon.

In addition to July 20, Colombia has a second important day of remembrance connected to independence: the Battle of Boyacá is commemorated on August 7. This decisive victory of Bolívar's army in 1819 is seen as a pivotal moment in the struggle for independence.
