PHILIPSBURG--Police are investigating a traffic accident that occurred on Thursday morning, October 23, involving a scooter and a motor vehicle on A.J.C. Brouwers Road near the entrance of a hardware store.

According to St. Maarten Police Force KPSM, the accident happened just before 8:00am. Emergency services were quickly dispatched after several calls were received by Central Police Dispatch.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the scooter rider was travelling from the Church Hill roundabout toward Cole Bay and attempted to overtake several vehicles. At that same moment, the driver of a gold-coloured Toyota was making a left turn into the hardware store’s parking lot, causing the scooter to collide with the driver’s side of the vehicle.

The scooter rider sustained injuries of an unknown nature and was treated on the scene by ambulance personnel before being transported to the Sint Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for further treatment.

This is the second time in just five days that a scooter has collided with a car at the same location. On Saturday, October 18, a scooter collided with the left side of a Toyota RAV4 as the vehicle exited the parking lot. The impact caused the scooter rider’s right leg to become trapped under the vehicle, highlighting ongoing safety concerns at this busy intersection.

The KPSM Traffic Department is conducting a full investigation to determine the exact cause of both collisions.

Police are once again urging all motorists to drive with caution, particularly during the busy morning hours. Scooter riders are advised to avoid overtaking in unsafe conditions and to always wear appropriate safety gear. “Road safety is a shared responsibility,” KPSM emphasised. “Stay alert and help prevent accidents.”
