Elections February 9, new parliament on March 14
St. Maarten – Governor Eugène Holiday signed the national decree to dissolve parliament yesterday afternoon. Elections are scheduled for February 9 and the new parliament will be sworn in on March 14, 2016. Postulation Day is just before Christmas, on December 23.
All members of the Council of Ministers and the minister plenipotentiary tendered their resignation yesterday as well.
Governor Holiday repeated his request yesterday that the ministers and the minister plenipotentiary only handle the daily operations of government and that they continue working in the interest of St. Maarten, “until a decision has been taken concerning the request for resignation.”
Governor Holiday received a second revised draft national decree to dissolve parliament last Friday. This was after the governor had advised to seek consensus with parliament. He also told Prime Minister Gumbs that neither the draft decree of September 30, nor the revised one of October 14 met the requirements of the electoral law.
The governor signed the third draft of the national decree. It calls for elections on February 9 and for the dissolution of parliament on March 14 of next year.
