St. Maarten News – British millionaire Sir Michael Smurfit is in St. Maarten these days. The former CEO of the Smurfit Kappa Group – a global packaging company with 42,000 employees and annual turnover of $6.6 billion (2009) – was spotted on Saturday evening having dinner at Izi, the reputed Italian restaurant in Simpson Bay with family members.

Smurfit’s worth has been estimated at $319 million in 2015 by the Irish Independent. In 2010, he was still ranked 25th with a fortune of $438 million to his name. He turned his father’s modest cardboard box company into the global giant Smurfit Kappa. The Sunday Independent ranked him last year as the 42nd richest man of Ireland, even though he was born in England and resides in Monaco.

Smurfit, who will turn 80 on August 7, owns the super yacht Lady Ann Magee, a vessel with an estimated worth of around $58 million.

The ageing tycoon was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in 2005. He is the honorary consul to Monaco. His son Anthony is currently the CEO of the Smurfit Kappa Group.

In 2005, Smurfit, was a guest at the wedding of Prince Albert II of Monaco to Charlene Wittstock, together with royalty, fashion icons and celebrities like Mel Gibson, Demi Moore and Sir Roger Moore. Smurfit and Prince Albert share a passion for rugby.
