Teen Times appeal to youth: Face Coronavirus with Self-Sacrifice, Not Selfishness

PHILIPSBURG:— With the drastic rise in COVID-19 infections on the island putting everyone at extreme risk, the young writers Teen Times on Thursday appealed to their peers and young adults to face the COVID-19 pandemic with self-sacrifice, not selfishness.

After almost two years into this pandemic, Teen Times said, everyone should know their personal responsibilities in fighting this virus and minimizing the risk to themselves and others, “especially young people who have access to information on every level. “If ever there was a time for self-sacrifice, this is it. Our community and the entire island need us to overcome one of the biggest crises of our lives.”

The group called on their peers to limit small gatherings whenever they are not necessary, scale back or cut out the late-night socializing and use their social media platforms to re-enforce public health measures. “Nobody is better than us at using social media. Let us put that power to use to send a socially responsible message in this fight,” Teen Times said.

“Even young people with good intentions could be contributing to the spread of the virus. All it takes is one unsuspecting person who’s infected for the spread to occur. From there, contagion is exponential. We believe young people and young adults can be a big factor in changing the course of the pandemic on St. Maarten. We can try to forget about the pandemic and live as if we’re in the relatively carefree past. Or we can act as role models, leading the charge in supporting public health measures. We must do our part,” Teen Times concluded.
