PHILIPSBURG:--- USM has received the financial support of The Representation of the Netherlands towards the first International Conference on Small Island States (SIDS) and Subnational Island Jurisdictions (SNIJs) to be held March 11-14, 2018. A representative of the local organizing committee met with Chris Johnson, Head of the Representation this week, to share details about the conference. At that meeting, Mr Johnson commended USM for its initiative to host the conference which will address topics ranging from governance and global engagement, to climate change and tourism. USM and the Local Organizing Committee wishes to express gratitude to Mr Johnson, not only for the financial support of his office but also for his words of encouragement and well wishes regarding the execution of the Conference.
The program will include an important event focussed on Sint Maarten/Saint Martin issues of local development, inter-island cooperation and ties with overseas partners. Preparations for the conference are in full swing, with prospective keynote speakers from the Dutch Caribbean, the wider region and global island development experts. One of the goals of the organizing committee is to secure participation of a large number of academics, policy practitioners and university students from the Caribbean region.
