BASSETERRE:— After 8 days of hearing before the criminal assizes, the suspects that appeared for the courts for the brutal murder of Mathieu Carty were all found guilty.

The jury found the 7 suspects guilty for acts of torture and barbarism, the 7 detainees who appeared before the Assize Court of Basse-Terre were all imprisoned for other crimes prior to the brutal murder of Carty who was killed in his prison cell. Carty a St. Martiner, was detained as a suspect in the murder of a tourist identified as Wendy Montulet. The victim a Belgian tourist was murdered in July 2016.

The jurors ruled that the acts committed by the fellow inmates, against Mathieu Carty, had resulted in death without intention.
The 7 accused have accumulated a total of 151 years in prison. Christian Abrin, Horace Flanders, and Delbert Baker were each convicted to 23 years in prison, Thaice Benjamin and Emmanuel Blaise received 21 years imprisonment each, while David Lumène and Cliffort Matthew each got 20 years.
The defendants wanted to teach Mathieu Carty a lesson in retaliation for his actions against the young Belgian tourist that was also brutally murdered. But the members of the jury did not accept the intentions of the 7 detainees, believing that they had shown violence and humiliation towards their victim.
They were therefore all found responsible, and therefore guilty, confirming the criminal qualification which had been retained by the prosecution. The expression “humiliation” often came up in the court’s motives, which may have led the jury to decide, by 6 out of 9 votes, in favor of the conviction.
