~ Alexander Gumbs scored highest in the recruitment matrix scorecard.~

PHILIPSBURG:— The Council of Ministers has taken a decision on Tuesday to appoint Alexander Gumbs as the statutory director of Port of St. Maarten Group of Companies. Gumbs is expected to officially take up the position by early September 2021.
Gumbs was selected as the preferred candidate to fill the vacant position since Mark Mingo was officially dismissed. This decision was taken in January 2021. However, only on Tuesday, the Council of Ministers took the official decision to appoint the new statutory director who has been heading the port’s operations as in an advisory position since February 2021, when he returned to St. Maarten to resume working for Ports St. Maarten.
The report from the Corporate Governance Council (CGC) states that it agrees with the Shareholder representative and the nomination by the Supervisory Board of Directors of SMHHC that based on the qualifications, results of the selection procedures Gumbs has extensive experience in the cruise industry, therefore Alexander Gumbs is the ideal candidate to lead SMHHC NV as its Chief Executive Officer.
The CGC further states that it has no serious objections to the appointment of Mr. Gumbs as the CEO and Managing Director of SMHHC.

In their review the CGC said it is evident why the SBOD chose Gumbs as their first preferred candidate, as he was selected based on his performance and because he scored the highest in the recruitment matrix scorecard assessment.

However, the council warns the minister to ensure that there is no conflict of interest as indicated in chapter 3 sub-8 of the Corporate Governance Code.

 Alexander Gumbs began working at the Harbor Group of Companies in 2010 as an intern and was hired in 2012 as the Business Development Officer, he was then promoted to Business and Marketing Manager prior to resigning from the government-owned company in June 2019 to take up Director of Operations and Development with Carnival Corporation the parent company of Carnival Cruises.
