SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - Today, July 24, 2026, the University of St. Martin joins the wider community in commemorating the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Albert Claudius “Claude” Wathey. Born on July 24, 1926, Dr. Wathey is remembered as a visionary leader whose contributions helped shape the social and economic development of St. Maarten. Widely regarded as the Father of Modern St. Maarten, his leadership and forward-thinking vision contributed to the island’s transformation and created new possibilities for generations of St. Maarteners. His legacy is also closely connected to the history of the University of St. Martin. Dr. Wathey was among the key figures who envisioned and supported the establishment of an institution of higher education that would serve the people of St. Martin and the surrounding Caribbean region. USM first opened in 1989 as an extension of Johnson & Wales University, creating opportunities for students to pursue higher education and professional training close to home. That founding vision extended beyond degree programs. It also included vocational skills and short-term training designed to respond to the needs of the wider community, a commitment that remains central to USM’s mission today. As USM reflects on Dr. Wathey’s centennial, the university recognizes the enduring impact of his belief in education, opportunity, and nation-building. His vision continues to be reflected in every student who enters USM seeking knowledge, growth, and a brighter future. The University of St. Martin proudly honors his legacy and remains committed to carrying forward the principle that education can transform individuals, strengthen communities, and shape the future of a nation. A century of vision. A legacy that lives on.
