SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY, (DCOMM) – The fourth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm (TS) Dolly dissipated, and the remnants of Dolly are forecast to pass Sint Maarten Saturday night into Sunday.
According to the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten (MDS), a heavy rainfall and flood advisory will be in effect as of 7:00 PM Saturday, August 29, 2026, tonight for the next 24-hours.
Forecast weather impacts are heavy rain showers, thunderstorms which could result in street flooding and rock mudslides, and therefore motorists are advised to exercise caution in flood prone areas (see attachment).
Fire Chief and National Disaster Coordinator of the Office of Disaster Management (ODM) Clive Richardson is calling on the populace to exercise cautions as heavy rainfall could increase flood, rock fall and mudslide risks.
Following the issuance of a Heavy Rainfall/Flood Advisory by MDS, ODM is urging residents and motorists to exercise increased caution, particularly in flood-prone areas and locations near hillsides and steep slopes.
Sint Maarten has experienced an extended period of very dry conditions over approximately the past four months. Prolonged drought can leave soil dry, compacted and less able to immediately absorb significant amounts of rainfall. Heavy rainfall over a short period can therefore result in increased surface runoff and localized flooding.
Extended dry conditions can also weaken vegetation and loosen rocks, soil and other material on hillsides. When significant rainfall occurs, these materials can become unstable, increasing the possibility of rock falls, soil movement and localized mudslides.
Residents living near hillsides, cliffs, steep slopes, retaining walls or areas historically affected by falling rocks are advised to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rainfall and for some time afterward.
Members of the public should watch for warning signs such as falling stones, cracks appearing in soil or retaining walls, leaning trees or utility poles, unusual movement of soil, muddy water flowing from hillsides or unusual sounds coming from slopes.
Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution when travelling along roads adjacent to hillsides. Rocks, mud, branches and other debris may fall onto roadways during or following periods of heavy rainfall.
Residents should never attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads or rapidly flowing water. Floodwater can be deeper and stronger than they appear and may conceal damaged roads, open drains or other hazards.
Where it is safe to do so before heavy rainfall begins, homeowners and businesses should ensure that drains, gutters and surrounding areas are clear of garbage, leaves and other debris that could obstruct the flow of water. Persons should not attempt to clear drains, guts or waterways while flooding is occurring.
Heavy rainfall can create dangerous conditions very quickly. Residents are therefore encouraged to remain alert, take preventative action where possible and avoid unnecessary risks.
