SINT MAARTEN (GREAT BAY) - Member of Parliament (MP) Egbert J. Doran has expressed satisfaction with recent remarks by Minister of Justice Nathalie Tackling regarding a firearm amnesty program. During the Budget Public Meeting of Parliament, MP Doran reiterated his proposal for pairing a gun amnesty drive with recruitment opportunities to provide meaningful alternatives for those surrendering firearms.
“I’m pleased that the Minister recognizes the value of this initiative and is working with key stakeholders to make it a reality,” said MP Doran.
The Minister reaffirmed her commitment to reducing firearms on the island, highlighting plans for collaboration with the Police Force of St. Maarten (KPSM) and the inclusion of incentives for surrendering illegal weapons.
MP Doran commended the Minister’s focus on a well-structured approach, emphasizing the importance of balancing enforcement with opportunities for community upliftment. “This program can offer hope and alternatives to those in challenging circumstances,” he noted.
MP Doran stresses the importance of timely action and urges the Ministry to prioritize the implementation of the amnesty program while maintaining transparency and communication with the public to ensure its success.
