THE NETHERLANDS (THE HAGUE) – Minister Plenipotentiary Drs. Gracita R. Arrindell, attended the 5th UNESCO Global Forum Against Racism and Discrimination, recently held at the World Forum in The Hague, Netherlands.

The two-day international gathering, organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in partnership with the Kingdom of the Netherlands, brought together government representatives, international organizations, policymakers, academics, civil society representatives, and advocates committed to combating racism and discrimination worldwide.

Held under the theme “From Commitment to Accountability: Change the System, Change the Future,” the forum emphasized the importance of translating international commitments and policy declarations into measurable actions that address racism, discrimination, and inequality.

His Majesty King Willem-Alexander attended the opening of the Forum, while the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Rob Jetten, delivered an opening address highlighting the importance of confronting historical injustices and strengthening efforts to eliminate racism and discrimination.

The Forum provided an international platform for discussions on systemic racism, institutional accountability, reparatory justice, education, social inclusion, and the role of governments and international organizations in advancing equality.

Particular attention was given to the continuing consequences of slavery and colonialism, including their impact on communities of African descent, and the importance of developing practical measures to address historical inequalities.

The discussions also examined the need for stronger institutional frameworks, improved data collection, greater accountability, and meaningful participation by communities affected by racism and discrimination.

For Sint Maarten and the wider Caribbean, the Forum's focus on historical recognition, reparatory justice, and the legacy of slavery was particularly relevant.

The Caribbean's historical experience with slavery and colonialism continues to influence discussions concerning cultural identity, education, social development, historical awareness, and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Minister Plenipotentiary Arrindell's attendance provided an opportunity for Sint Maarten to be represented at an important international gathering addressing issues that remain relevant to the country's historical and contemporary development.

The Forum also highlighted the Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034), proclaimed by the United Nations to promote recognition, justice, and development for people of African descent.

An important aspect of the discussions concerned reparatory justice and the need to move beyond historical acknowledgment toward practical initiatives that support education, cultural preservation, institutional reform, and community development.

These subjects are particularly relevant to ongoing efforts within Sint Maarten to strengthen awareness of the country's slavery past and promote a greater understanding of its historical and cultural heritage.

The Forum further addressed emerging challenges associated with discrimination in the digital environment, including online hate speech, algorithmic bias, and the potential for artificial intelligence systems to reinforce existing inequalities.

The international gathering underscored the importance of cooperation between governments, educational institutions, civil society organizations, and international bodies in developing effective and sustainable responses to racism and discrimination.

As a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Sint Maarten has an interest in international developments that address historical injustices, promote equal opportunities, and strengthen the protection of fundamental human rights.

The Cabinet of the Minister Plenipotentiary in The Hague continues to facilitate Sint Maarten's representation and engagement with institutions and organizations whose work is relevant to the country's development and interests within the Kingdom and internationally.

Through its participation in international gatherings such as the UNESCO Global Forum Against Racism and Discrimination, Sint Maarten remains engaged in broader discussions on equality, historical recognition, social inclusion and the advancement of human rights.

The UNESCO Global Forum Against Racism and Discrimination serves as an important reminder that addressing racism and inequality requires more than just declarations of intent. It requires sustained political commitment, institutional responsibility, cooperation, and measurable progress.
