SINT MAARTEN/NEW YORK — The Honorable Claret Connor, Minister of Public Health, Social Development and Labor, attended a high-level side event hosted by the Global Coalition on Aging this afternoon in New York during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The event brought together international leaders, health experts and policymakers to explore innovations in disease prevention and early detection, financial preparedness for healthy aging, and the role of storytelling in reshaping society’s perceptions of aging.
Discussions emphasized the importance of moving beyond treatment-focused healthcare systems by investing more deliberately in prevention, early intervention and policies that help people remain healthy, active and independent throughout their lives.
“Healthy aging begins long before a person reaches an advanced age. It requires sustained investment in prevention, early detection and accessible healthcare at every stage of life,” Minister Connor stated.
“For Sint Maarten, these international discussions provide valuable insights as we continue working to strengthen our healthcare and social-support systems. Our objective must be to ensure that every person has the opportunity to age with dignity, independence and a strong quality of life.”
The program also featured perspectives from Japan and Chile, alongside discussions involving representatives from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the health sector, academia and international organizations.
Minister Connor’s participation reflects the Government of Sint Maarten’s commitment to strengthening preventive healthcare, encouraging healthier lifestyles and developing inclusive policies that respond to evolving needs of the country’s population.
