SINT MAARTEN (POND ISLAND) - The Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment & Infrastructure (VROMI) advises the public that the Main Landfill will temporarily close on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. until the end of the day to facilitate essential trenching and fiber optic installation works.

The temporary closure is required to allow a trench to be excavated across the landfill entrance road for the installation of a fiber optic cable. The connection will provide a stable internet connection to the landfill weighbridge booth, supporting more reliable weighbridge operations.

The upcoming works will now allow the connection to be completed.

Temporary Operating Schedule

On Sunday, August 16, 2026, the Main Landfill will operate as follows:

  • 6:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Landfill OPEN for normal waste processing.
  • 12:00 p.m. – End of Day: Landfill CLOSED to facilitate trenching and fiber optic installation.

Normal landfill operating hours will resume on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The trenching works will be carried out by VROMI Yard personnel, while the installation of the sleeve and fiber optic cabling will be executed by TELEM.

The Ministry is asking residents, businesses, waste haulers, and other landfill users to plan their waste disposal activities accordingly and make use of the landfill during the morning operating period on Sunday, where possible.

The Ministry of VROMI apologizes for any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and appreciates the public's cooperation and understanding as these improvements are carried out to support more reliable and efficient landfill operations.
