SINT MAARTEN/TANZANIA - Essence and Mind has successfully completed its inaugural Girl Empowerment Academy sessions in Arusha, Tanzania, marking an exciting milestone in the organization's mission to uplift girls and young women through confidence, leadership, mentorship, and personal development.
Founder Paula T. Gordon traveled from St. Maarten to Tanzania to begin building meaningful partnerships with organizations dedicated to improving the lives of women and girls. Working alongside Perfect Vision Women Tanzania, Gordon facilitated interactive empowerment sessions with young women participating in the organization's programs.
The initial session introduced the girls to activities focused on confidence-building, self-expression, and personal presence. What began as a room of shy participants quickly transformed into one filled with laughter, encouragement, and confidence as the girls embraced interactive exercises, including public speaking, confidence walks, and positive self-expression.
"The greatest joy for me was watching the girls become more confident as the session progressed," Gordon shared. "By the end of the workshop, they were cheering each other on, smiling, and believing a little more in themselves. That is what Essence and Mind is all about."
During a follow-up session, the focus expanded to helping participants find and use their voices, encouraging them to speak confidently about their dreams, aspirations, and future goals. The girls shared ambitions of becoming lawyers, teachers, chefs, tour guides, entrepreneurs, advocates for women, and community leaders, demonstrating that while opportunity may be limited for some, their dreams remain limitless.
Perfect Vision Women Tanzania, an organization committed to empowering women and girls from vulnerable backgrounds, provides year-long programs that combine life skills, economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, and community outreach. Participants gain practical skills, including small business development and income-generating activities, helping them build sustainable futures for themselves and their families.
Recognizing the impact of the organization's work, Gordon also made a financial contribution to support Perfect Vision's ongoing programs, reaffirming Essence and Mind's commitment to collaboration and community partnership.
Rather than introducing duplicate programming, Essence and Mind seeks to complement existing initiatives by contributing confidence-building, leadership development, mentorship, and personal growth experiences that strengthen the work already taking place within local communities.
"This visit has reinforced my belief that empowerment begins with listening," Gordon said. "The girls of Arusha have incredible dreams and ambitions. My hope is that Essence and Mind can continue to walk alongside organizations like Perfect Vision Women Tanzania to help girls recognize their worth, discover their voice, and pursue their purpose."
The visit also marks the beginning of broader discussions regarding future collaborative initiatives in Tanzania, with additional meetings planned with organizations committed to advancing opportunities for girls and young women.
