GREAT BAY--The United People’s Party (UP) is preparing for sweeping internal changes that will redefine its vision, restructure roles, and review titles, with adjustments to be made where needed. Party leader MP Omar Ottley, clearly understanding that image matters, said the upcoming changes are about reaffirming the party’s commitment to excellence, transparency, and service.
Though he did not comment on issues such as the UP’s name and signature color green, it is expected that these will remain. But behind the scenes, a strategic, structural, and organizational overhaul is already underway to restore public trust and position the party for the future.
Founded by Theo Heyliger, whose supporters and family have publicly claimed ownership of the party in a messy display of transitionary politics. The UP has seen its leadership pass through several hands. Rolando Brison, once personally appointed by Heyliger, eventually stepped down after Ottley outpolled him in consecutive elections, paving the way for Ottley to take over. While the leadership transition was decisive, unconfirmed internal matters have continued to tarnish the party’s reputation, issues Ottley appears intent on addressing as part of the reset.
Ottley said the process is “not about casting blame” but about reaffirming the party’s commitment to excellence, transparency, and service. He described the goal as bringing forward “a refreshed, refined, and focused team of individuals whose passion for St. Maarten is matched by their integrity, capability, and vision.” He acknowledged that while the UP’s mission remains “noble” and its intentions “pure,” the path forward has been hindered by both perception and “sustained attacks designed to undermine the growth and potential of this organization.”
He stressed that image matters in politics, calling it “the bridge between leadership and public trust,” and said the UP will not shy away from the work needed to rebuild stronger than ever. “We hear you. We have listened. And we are acting,” Ottley declared, appealing directly to supporters who have hesitated to stand with the party openly due to political mudslinging and character attacks. “Your silence does not go unnoticed, and your quiet loyalty is appreciated. I ask you now—stand with UP.”
Ottley framed the changes as part of a broader preparation not just for electoral success but for restoring faith in politics as a tool for national upliftment. “The road ahead will not be without challenges,” he said, “but through continued service and representation of you, the people, in Parliament, the dedication of our board, and the courage of candidates who remain faithful to the vision of the New UP Party, we will begin our preparation now—not for survival, but for victory.”
While the specifics of the internal reorganization have yet to be detailed, Ottley left no doubt that the shake-up is aimed at aligning the party’s structure and message with what he calls “the vision of a stable, fair, and prosperous future” for St. Maarten.
