Senator Annick Pétrus of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy revealed on Wednesday that she was the victim of a violent attack at her home overnight. In a message posted on social media, the elected official explained that armed individuals broke into her house and held her captive.
“Last night, armed individuals broke into my home. At gunpoint, I was held captive, tied up, and gagged. I experienced moments of utter uncertainty,” she wrote. The senator indicated, however, that she is now out of danger: “By the grace of God, I am safe and sound today. While this ordeal can be deeply traumatic, my health is thankfully reassuring.”
Annick Pétrus also sends “her most sincere thanks” to the law enforcement agencies, the national gendarmerie, and to “all the people who have shown [her] their support and solidarity” since the events.
The exact circumstances of this attack, as well as the perpetrators' motives, remain unknown at this stage. An investigation is underway to shed light on the circumstances of this attack. Despite this ordeal, the elected official affirms her determination to continue her term. "This attack will not call into question my commitment to serving Saint-Martin and its inhabitants," she asserts, before thanking "each and every one" for their thoughts, prayers, and support.
